These stories were created in 2013, after the acquisition of LucasFilm by Disney, but prior to the rebranding of the Star Wars Expanded Universe as the noncanonical “Legends” continuity. The stories are themselves an attempt at writing the story of the Star Wars Prequels (Episodes I, II, and III) as my childhood mind in the years prior to the release of The Phantom Menace in 1999 thought the events of the Prequels would play out. Even then, my imagination conceived a darker version of the Clone Wars and the fall of the Old Republic than what we were given in Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith. My ideas of those events drew on the media of the Expanded Universe, particularly the works of Tom Veitch, Timothy Zahn, and the “Shadows of the Empire” media campaign — a more thorough introduction can be found here. Try as you read these stories to set your mind back to those heady days of 1998, or even earlier. Back to when the Star Wars films were a trilogy and most of its universe a mystery.
